Subject/Spaces is a series of abstract, monochrome images drawn from 12 iconic international architectural sites. The photos are sequenced from the most to the least visually complex, exploring how a conscious gaze can transform our experience of our surroundings.

The images invite us to reflect on the dynamic interplay between environment and perception. In what ways are we subjects of a given space? In what ways do we make that space the subject of our experience?

Images of some sites are clustered together, drawing our attention to the inherent visual complexity of that place. In contrast, images from other locations are dispersed throughout the sequence, highlighting how the positioning and framing of our visual field influences the impact of place on our psyche.

While we can’t control certain aspects of our environment—materials, structures, light, weather—this series illustrates how being a mindful observer allows us to actively participate in shaping our place in the world.
